J.Crew partners with Liya Kebede to carry her handmade children's collection, Lemlem

(NEW YORK) When J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons and team met supermodel, mother of two, and International Goodwill Ambassador Liya Kebede, a relationship was born. Lyons approached Kebede to appear in the April catalog, but both quickly realized their relationship needn't end there. The product of their partnership? Not only will Kebede be the first model to be the exclusive face of a J.Crew catalog, but J.Crew's Crewcuts line will pick up pieces from the model's handmade children's clothing line, Lemlem. Lemlem (the name means "to bloom") was launched by Kebede in 2007, with all of the pieces made by hand from natural cotton in her native Ethiopia. The line will be available at Crewcuts store locations and at jcrew.com beginning in April.

Looks like Tiffany & Co. has joined the fashion industry and is using African-American models to promote their merchandise. I hope it continues because the world is filled with women of every hue. Wearing plenty of diamonds, Liya Kebede looks absolutely beautiful in this ad. Her style is definitely legendary.

Italian Vogue showcased their entire July 2008 issue with all Black models. I feel this is awesome and long overdue. With our impeccable style, it shows our range and depth even though we make up such a small percentage of models. I see no color lines in the fashion industry or any industry for that matter. Kudos to all the Black models who have paved the way, such as: Iman, Karen Alexander, Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Beverly Johnson, Liya Kebede, Veronica Webb and Alek Wek; just to name a few.
